The City of Canton Texas

Location and Population

Situated between Dallas to the west, and Shreveport to the east, Canton is located on Texas Highway 64 and Interstate Highway I-20.

Canton is the county seat of Van Zandt County, and home of the world famous First Monday Trade Days.

Today's permanent population is about 5,000 residents. Five exits from I-20 serve Canton, with Exit 527, TX Highway 19, being the most popular for First Monday visitors and shoppers.

Canton is a Texas Main Street City, a National Main Street City, and a National Preserve America City. The historic downtown district features unique shops, restaurants, galleries and shopping open year-round, not just on First Monday flea market weekends.

History of Canton

Canton was surveyed in 1840, but no settlement was made until 1850, when the town was laid out and named by settlers moving west from Old Canton in Smith County. The first courthouse at Canton opened in 1850, and a post office (the county's fourth) was established in that year. Canton was incorporated in 1919, when it first elected a mayor and aldermen.
